Explore the North is a wintry urban festival presenting the historical Leeuwarden city centre as stage for music, literature, theatre, visual art and much more besides. The seventh edition of Explore the North will take place on 22, 23 and 24 November 2019. Will you be attending? Again? Get your festival ticket here.
Visitors to previous editions enjoyed Nils Frahm, Julia Holter, Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon, Lisa Hannigan & The Colorist Orchestra, BALOJI, Tamino, Amen Dunes, Jóhann Jóhannson, Bert Wagendorp, Islam Chipsy & EEK, Armando & Oleg Lysenko, to name but a few! And much, much more besides.
Explore the North is much more than simply the festival in November
Since this year Explore is also a budding interdisciplinary production house for literature, language and multilingualism. We are not in this alone, but are working together with many local, national and international artists and partners. We develop various activities throughout the year, with the festival in November as peak moment.
In 2018, Explore the North has developed into an interdisciplinary production house. We have sought out partners in the Netherlands and abroad to work together with on various local, national and international projects, which share literature, language and multilingualism as common feature. Intensive collaboration with multilingualism platform Lân fan taal was a great boon in making this development possible. As a production house, our aim is to offer (young) theatre makers, writers, poets, musicians and other talents from Friesland and beyond opportunities to develop themselves based in Leeuwarden and Friesland. In addition, Explore the North – as legacy of Lân fan taal – will be providing a long-term impulse to the production climate in Friesland.
As such, Explore the North is developing into an organisation which develops activities throughout the year, culminating in a wintry arts festival in November. Some of the projects which came to fruition in Leeuwarden in 2018 will be touring the Netherlands in the summer. These are Solo, developed in collaboration with Lân fan taal and the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra (NNO) and the unique hammock machine De Relaxerette.
